On the brink of Apocalypse

No, I'm not talking about global affairs. I'm talking about baseball.

After last night's win over St. Louis, giving them a commanding 3-0 lead in the World Series, the Boston Red Sox are guaranteed either spectacular glory or darkest infamy. If they finish off the Cardinals (tonight, tomorrow, or whenever), they will have finally exorcised the Curse and the people of Boston will probably build brazen idols of the team to worship. If they should somehow lose the next four games, they will crush, perhaps forever, the hopes and dreams of a city of hungry fans. I shudder to think what will happen in Boston if the latter occurs. Somehow, I doubt the intense irony of being the first team to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the playoffs and then the first team to blow the same advantage in the Series will provide much consolation in Beantown.

Exciting times.
